A "Blended" Driver Education Program

Life is a lot easier with a driver’s license. For teens under 18 in Maine, Driver’s Education is a required step toward earning that independence. At Lighthouse Driving Academy, we make the process clear, flexible, and supportive for both students and parents.

We offer a state-approved blended AAA driver education program. State law requires 30 classroom hours and 10 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, but that doesn’t mean your life has to revolve around a rigid, in-person class schedule. With our blended model, students complete the fundamentals through virtual Zoom classes (9 hours) with Lighthouse instructors, complete 25 hours at their own pace using AAA’s nationally recognized "How to Drive" online course, then take their final exam/permit test in person.

This means fewer schedule conflicts, less stress over missed classes, and the ability to pause, replay, and review lessons as often as needed — all while meeting Maine BMV requirements.

Once a student successfully completes all required portions of Maine Driver’s Education, they will be issued a Course Completion Certificate valid for 60 days. During that time, students must obtain their official learner’s permit from the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles, which is valid for two years.

Per Maine law, drivers with a learner’s permit must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 20 years old, has held a valid license for two consecutive years, and is seated next to the permitted driver.
